Carol Goatham for Abbey Ward

Swale Green Party are delighted to say that Carol Goatham will be standing as our Green Party candidate for Abbey Ward, Faversham in the Swale Borough Council by-election on 14th December 2023.

Carol has lived in Faversham all her life and attended Ospringe and The Lady Capel schools. She has a long history of volunteering in Faversham and villages, including working with:

  • Gospel Mission Parent & Toddlers group
  • Baptist Church Butterflies
  • Boughton Beavers, Cubs and Scouts assistant leader
  • Volunteer at Boughton’s Pop Up Cafe.
  • Co-Secretary of The Guild at the United Reformed Church in Preston Street we provide a varied programme of interesting talks and entertainment for members.
  • Faversham and Villages Water Quality Testing (FAVWAT)

Carol co-founded Farms, Fields & Fresh air:Faversham in 2021 to raise awareness and protest against proposed mass housing estates around Faversham and surrounding villages, she helped organise and lead two marches to raise awareness, spoke at Town Council meetings and lobbied our MP and government ministers about the loss of democracy in planning. The Farms, Fields & Fresh air:Faversham  volunteers raised the issue in the national press and the Community Planning Alliance escalated debate in the House of Lords.

Carol has campaigned against the loss of trees on Love Lane and against loss of trees in our Conservation Areas and in Faversham Recreation Ground. She petitioned Swale Borough Council to introduce a new Tree Policy on new housing estates.

Carol continues to highlight local issues with development to Kent County Council and Swale Borough Council departments, the Environment Agency and other stakeholders and to the attention of the press and public. She is regularly in contact with councillors and our MP about issues that matter to local people (domiciliary care during covid, social care for the elderly, better health care facilities, ambulance wait times, meeting the needs of those who need social housing, those on the waiting list locally, empty buildings such as Kiln Court, Kingsfield Care Home, loss of trees and biodiversity, water quality).

Carol is a Boughton-under-Blean Parish Councillor and helped to introduce warm hubs to Boughton last winter and volunteered making refreshments at them too, meeting many villagers in the process. She is a member of Boughton Under Blean Village Hall Management Committee and recently organised a free Restart-A-Heart defibrillator and resuscitation training for locals.

Carol says, “I have worked in the care sector in different capacities for many years. My work in the NHS and campaigning for the community, has exposed me to many areas where people experience inequalities: education, transport, ageing, disability, health inequalities, learning disabilities. I want to help bring democracy to the fore in my community; to help people understand the decisions that are being made in the political arena that affect their everyday lives, to empower them to have a greater choice and say on local issues”.
